Designers working with applications that require sprayed fluids or gases are often challenged with how to evaluate a sprayer’s performance. Assessing spray pressure significantly contributes to improved product design; however, product designers and process engineers may also need to know how and where a spray contacts a surface. For instance, customers will reject a paint-stripping product whose pressure damages the wood underneath while perfume may lose its appeal if the sprayer blasts the product on one concentrated location rather than distributing a fine mist of scent.
For these reasons, PPS offers two types of spray sensing technologies: either pressure or pattern sensing.

Spray Pressure Sensing
Spray Pressure sensing enables the measurement of spray distribution onto a surface and/or the impact pressure generated by spray particles. In this application, a tactile sensor surface identifies the location and amount of pressure generated by either a liquid or a gaseous spray.

In semiconductor fabrication, PPS sensors measured the pressure from spray tools used to clean materials to ensure uniform pressure distribution and reduce contamination without risking unnecessary damage.
Spray Pattern Sensing
PPS spray pattern sensing solutions compares the electrical properties of the air surface to that of the spray. Consequently, this patented technology is able to identify where a sprayed fluid or gas actually lands. The information is sent to a computer to provide a real-time image of the spray pattern. Users can then analyze the data to understand the current spray distribution, and revise designs to achieve optimal results.
